THE AMERICAN CONFERENCE ON THEORETICAL
CHEMISTRY
The Local Organizing Committee invites you and your family to save the dates
for the American Conference on Theoretical Chemistry, to be held in Los Angeles,
California, July 16-21, 2005, on the beautiful campus of the University of California
Los Angeles (UCLA).
About the Conference
The ACTC meeting is held every three years and is widely attended by theoretical
chemists from both the United States and abroad. This year the conference will
feature some speakers from related disciplines whose work is of considerable
importance to theoretical chemistry, thus further encouraging cross-fertilization.
The invited speakers are among the leading
scholars in their respective fields. To date, the list of invited speakers includes:
Robert Cave, Juan de Pablo, Weinan E, Philip Geissler, Sharon Hammes-Schiffer,
Martin Head-Gordon, Hannes Jonsson, Kenneth Jordan, Ronnie Kosloff, Christopher
Lee, Andrea Liu, Katja Lindenberg, Paul Madden, Dmitrii Makarov, Todd Martinez,
Andrew Rappe, Mark
Ratner, Karsten Reuter, Peter Rossky, Steven Schwartz, David
Srolovitz, Bruce Tidor, John Tully, Troy van Voorhis, Zhen-Gang Wang,
Sophia Yaliraki.
In addition to presentations by the invited speakers, two poster sessions have
been scheduled as part of the conference program.
A large meeting space has been reserved to accommodate both the posters and sponsors
on the poster presentation days.
The following are among the topics to be presented
at the at the 2005 conference: Dynamics, Electronic Structure, Statistical Mechanics,
Biochemistry, Materials, Nano/Bio, Electron Transfer, and Multiscale Modeling.
On-site registration begins on Saturday evening, July 16, 2005, along with a
Welcome Reception. Talks by the featured speakers begin on Sunday morning, July
17, at 8:30 a.m. with presentations and poster sessions continuing through 12:00
noon on Thursday, July 21. The conference also includes an optional excursion
to the J.
Paul Getty Center on Tuesday, July 19, and a closing Reception and Banquet
on Wednesday, July 20. The dates for this conference have been chosen to enable
participants to benefit from the most economical airfares.
In addition to an exciting and informative conference, several free blocks of
time have been built into the conference schedule, including one evening to accommodate
a nighttime outing. Discount tickets will be available to local amusement parks
and attractions, as well as information on nearby beaches.
About the Venue
UCLA offers comfortable accommodations that feature air-conditioned rooms and
private bathrooms in De Neve Plaza.
The meeting rooms are hotel-quality and are conveniently located adjacent to
the housing facilities. Breakfast and lunch in UCLA's award-winning dining rooms
and complimentary access to recreational facilities, including tennis courts
and swimming pools, are included in the housing package.
UCLA is located in the heart of Westwood
Village, one of the most charming districts in all of Los Angeles. The
perfect place for dining, shopping, and entertainment, Westwood Village is also
a center for the arts, where visitors can enjoy theater performances, concerts,
and visit the famous UCLA Hammer Museum.
Many Southern California attractions are
conveniently located to UCLA, including Disneyland, Universal Studios, the Santa
Monica Pier, and the beautiful beaches of the Pacific Ocean. Also nearby are
the J. Paul Getty Museum, Dodger Stadium, Sunset Strip, Hollywood, and the world-
famous communities of Beverly Hills and Bel-Air. To encourage attendees to stretch
this meeting into a family vacation, UCLA is making the special housing rate
in their facilities available three days prior to and three days after the conference.
